A designer will call at any address in G83, which is Alexandria itself along with Levenvale, Tullichewan, Dalmonach, Bonhill, Jamestown, Haldane, Renton and Balloch, and on up to Gartocharn, Luss, Arden, Tarbet and Arrochar. Dumbarton, Cardross and Helensburgh are part of the same round. Nothing is charged for the visit or for getting there, and you are under no obligation once the quote is in your hands.
It comes down to your room, and we will not pretend otherwise over the phone. The size of the floor counts first, then whether the suite stays on the pipe runs it is already on or moves across the room, then which bath, screen and wall finish you settle on. A tight bathroom in a Levenvale flat is a smaller undertaking than a wide room in a Balloch bungalow with a freestanding bath at one end and a walk-in shower at the other. Old floors sometimes hide work of their own. The measure-up and the quote cost nothing and commit you to nothing, and finance starts from £22 a week, subject to status.
It rarely does, it simply needs planning. The sandstone tenements along Main Street and Bridge Street share a stair with other families, so the stair is sheeted from the street door, deliveries are brought in as one load rather than a trickle, and the old suite is broken down and carried out instead of dragged. The floor beneath a new shower tray is checked first, because somebody usually lives underneath.
Three to six days on a normal Vale job, counted from the morning the old suite is lifted. A swap in a Jamestown semi finishes near the front of that. Relaying a rotten floor, moving the waste or wiring a new shower circuit pushes it to the back. You will have the running order before anything is disturbed, and a second toilet in the house is kept working throughout.
Old pipe, mostly, and the odd surprise in the floor. The terraced rows at Renton and Bonhill often still have iron waste, lead tails or a bathroom that was added to the house long after it was built. Your designer says at the survey what is likely, and anything found on the first morning is shown to you and costed before it is touched rather than sprung on you later.
For work inside the house, almost never. Replacing a bathroom is internal and needs no consent. It only becomes a question where the property is listed, or where a new extractor or vent has to come out through a wall that faces the road, and in Balloch, Gartocharn, Luss and Arden the national park authority handles that rather than the council. We give you the product details for any application and keep outside fittings out of sight.
Almost always. A great many Vale houses still run their hot water from a cylinder with a tank up in the loft, and that gentle head is what you are feeling. Flow and pressure are measured during the visit, then the fix is matched to the reading: a pump, a different cylinder, or a shower designed to work well on a low supply. Nothing is ordered until you know which.
