The designer measures the room, brings the sample cases and leaves a quote behind. Nothing is charged for the visit and nothing for the travelling.
The room sets the figure, not a brochure. A shower room in a Westerton cottage that stays on its existing pipe runs is at the lower end of what we fit. A large main bathroom in a Kilmardinny or Boclair house, with a bath on one side, a walk-in shower on the other and the waste rerouted between them, is considerably more. What goes on the walls matters as well, because full-height porcelain and wall panelling are not costed the same. The designer measures, plans and prices it free of charge and with no obligation. Finance is available from £22 a week, subject to status, and various deposit options are available.
For a bathroom, almost never. The Antonine Wall runs through Bearsden and parts of it, including the bath house off Roman Road, are protected as a scheduled monument, but those protections are about disturbing the ground, not about replacing a suite indoors. It would only come into play if the job needed digging outside, for a new external drain run for instance. If that turns out to be the case, we raise it with you and you check with East Dunbartonshire Council before anything is ordered.
Three to six days on almost every job in G61, counted from the morning the old suite is carried out. A like-for-like replacement in a Hillfoot semi finishes at the short end. Moving the bath and toilet, lifting a tiled floor or running a new circuit for a shower pushes it up. You get the plan for each day before anything is removed, and where there is a second toilet in the house it stays usable throughout.
More than a swap, usually, and it is worth knowing that up front. Houses built round Baljaffray and Mosshead in the seventies tend to have a boxed-in bath, tiled half-height walls, a separate airing cupboard and pipework routed to suit the layout of the day. Once the boxing and tiles come off, the walls almost always need making good. The designer allows for that at the survey so it is in the price rather than appearing as a problem on day two.
Often there is, particularly in the wider bathrooms of the older Drymen Road and Kilmardinny houses. It depends on the length of the free wall, where the waste can run to and whether the door swing can be changed or the door rehung. The designer measures all of that and, where the room will not take both, will show you what a bath with a fitted screen and a decent valve gives you instead.
That is all arranged well before the first morning. A lot of Bearsden streets are cul-de-sacs or have a driveway rather than kerb space, so we agree at the survey where the van sits and how materials come in. The path and the hall floor are covered, the old suite and the rubble leave with us, and nothing is stacked at the kerb or left in the garden waiting for an uplift.

The Glasgow one, inside Dobbies Garden Centre at Braehead, 75 Kings Inch Drive, Renfrew, G51 4FB. There are full bathrooms built out on the floor, free parking and a café, and it is open 10am to 5pm, Monday to Sunday. Nobody has to make the trip, since the designer carries boards, tiles and tap finishes to the house, but plenty of people like to see a room standing before they commit.
