More than people expect. In the low-ceilinged back rooms of the older town cottages the gain usually comes from moving the basin, taking out a bulky bath in favour of a shorter one or a level tray, and putting storage on the wall rather than the floor. The designer measures the room and works up two or three layouts with you before a price is put to any of them, so you can see which gives the most floor back.
Nearly always, and where it will not we plan round it. The designer checks the track, the gate and the turning space at the survey, deliveries are timed for a day the fitters are on site, and if a big lorry cannot make the last stretch the load is transferred and brought down in smaller runs. Nothing is left sitting in the steading.
It rules out very little. Where a house runs to a septic tank the new waste connects to the same system the old one used, and the designer notes the run and the fall at the survey so nothing is assumed. What it does mean is that the fittings are chosen with the system in mind, and you will be told plainly if anything you are looking at would be unwise on it.
It is once the shower is matched to the supply. Older Angus houses very often heat the water in a cylinder fed from a loft tank, which is exactly why the shower dribbles. The flow is measured at the design visit, and then a pump, a different cylinder or a shower built for low pressure is specified around the reading rather than around a brochure.
