That is a familiar one in the older Hawick terraces, where the bathroom was added onto the back of the house long after it was built, often with thin walls and a flat roof over it. The fix is insulation behind new wall boards, a floor built up with insulation under it, a towel radiator sized for the room rather than a token one, and proper extraction so the warmth is not fighting damp. Knocking the two into one gives you enough width for a proper shower and somewhere to put a vanity unit. What has to be checked first is whether the dividing wall carries anything above it and where the existing waste runs sit. The designer looks at both on the visit and tells you plainly whether it is on.

Either into a shallow service wall built out in front of the stone, or boxed neatly into a corner, depending on how much floor the room can spare. Chasing deeply into a rubble stone wall is not something we like doing, because it weakens it and rarely makes good properly. A service wall costs you a few centimetres and gives you a flat surface for boards, a concealed cistern and somewhere for the shower valve to sit. The designer measures for it at the survey.
