At our Glasgow showroom inside Dobbies Garden Centre at Braehead, 75 Kings Inch Drive, Renfrew, G51 4FB, where the bathrooms are built and plumbed in and the parking is free. Open 10am until 5pm, all week. Kilmarnock is the other showroom. If you would sooner not make the trip, the samples come out to Stepps with the designer.
It depends entirely on the room. Floor area drives the tiling, the flooring and the hours on site. Holding the suite on the pipes already serving it costs less than moving everything, and the sanitaryware, the shower and the wall finish settle the balance. A compact bathroom in a Millerston flat is a lighter job than a large main bathroom in a Stepps villa with a freestanding bath and a separate walk-in shower. Anything hiding under an old floor is priced once it has been seen. The design visit and the quote are free with no obligation, and finance is available from £22 a week, subject to status.
3 to 6 days for almost every Stepps bathroom. Changing like for like is quickest. Moving the soil pipe, lifting a tired floor or wiring a fresh circuit for an electric shower takes it nearer the six. You are told what happens on each day before anything is disconnected, and a house with only one toilet is worked around.
Usually a great deal. The interwar villas and bungalows along the older avenues in Stepps tend to have a bathroom squeezed above the hall or over the stair, with a high cistern position, a cylinder cupboard in one corner and pipework that has been added to over ninety years. Once the survey shows what the floor and the stack will allow, moving the basin, turning the bath or losing the cupboard usually gives back far more space than people expect.
There generally is. The houses built on the old Cardowan ground and around Frankfield came with a plain suite, a narrow shower, almost no storage and a fan that struggles. None of the plumbing has to move, so the spend goes on the visible things: a wider shower, a vanity unit with drawers, better lighting and an extractor that actually clears the mirror.
Deal with the air and the surfaces together. An undersized fan, or one ducted into the loft rather than out through the wall or roof, simply moves the problem. We size the extractor for the room, duct it out properly and add a run-on timer or humidity sensing. Wall panelling instead of tile grout takes away the lines mould likes, and a heated rail keeps towels off the radiator.
The flow is tested at the design visit. Older Stepps houses often still heat water in a cylinder fed from a loft tank, which leaves an upstairs shower weak, and a pump or a different cylinder normally puts that right. Newer homes at Cardowan and Robroyston are usually mains fed and take a large head with no help. The shower offered matches the reading, not the picture on the box.
