A designer comes to the house with sample cases, measures the room and leaves a quote behind. Nothing is charged for the visit and nothing for calling out.
There is no flat rate, because the rooms are nothing like each other. A shower room in a Muirhead or Craigend house that keeps its existing plumbing is at the lower end of what we fit. A wide bathroom in a Bentinck or South Beach flat, where the layout changes and the waste has to find a new route, is a great deal more. The suite, the screen and the wall finish then move it again. The designer measures the room, plans it with you and prices it free of charge and with no obligation. Finance is available from £22 a week, subject to status, and various deposit options are available.
Both are planned in advance. Deliveries come in one drop so the close is not blocked more than once, the common stair is sheeted from the street door up, and the old suite goes straight out rather than sitting on a landing. Where a fan or vent has to come through a wall facing the water, we use a stainless or coated external grille rather than plain steel, because anything cheap facing the Firth will not last long.
Three to six days on almost every Troon job, counted from the morning the old suite is carried out. A swap that leaves the bath, basin and toilet on their current runs finishes at the quick end. Moving the plumbing, lifting a tiled floor or running a new circuit takes it up. You get the order of work day by day beforehand, and in a house with a second toilet that one is kept in service.
It changes what we check rather than what you end up with. A converted villa usually means deep timber joists, high ceilings, a bathroom carved out of what was once a larger room, and a neighbour directly below. So the floor is checked for the weight of a filled bath, the waste is traced properly before anything is cut, and acoustic insulation can go under the floor while the boards are up. All of that gets looked at on the visit rather than on the first morning.
Often, though the floor decides it. A wet room needs a fall built into the floor and the whole area tanked before anything is laid, which is straightforward on concrete and needs more care on timber joists, where the boards have to be cut out and a former set in. In an upper flat we are also thinking about the ceiling below. The designer checks what your floor is made of on the visit and tells you honestly whether a wet room or a low-profile tray is the better answer.
A lot of Troon customers go that way, and not only for the look. Panels run in large sheets with very few joints, so there is almost no grout to discolour in a room that gets damp and salty air through an open window. They wipe down in seconds and they go straight onto a prepared wall. Tiles still win where you want a particular texture or pattern, and the designer will bring both to the house so you can decide with them in front of you.
