A wide glazed wall in Ayrshire has to hold out a south-westerly that has come the whole way off the Firth of Clyde. Every panel seals on brush and rubber and bolts into the frame at the top and the bottom, the track drains instead of ponding, and the aluminium frame has a thermal break running through it so the metal is not a cold bridge. Folded away in summer, sealed tight the rest of the year.

Most jobs here price up between £2,500 and £6,500. The panel count, whether the frames are aluminium or uPVC and the glazing specification set the figure, and structural work is costed separately after the wall has been looked at. Various deposit options are available.
Where is your Ayrshire showroom?
Block 5, Unit 1, Glencairn Industrial Estate, Kilmarnock, KA1 4AZ, open 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday with free parking outside. Sunday visits are by appointment. There is a second showroom inside Dobbies at Braehead in Renfrew. The surveyor brings frame finishes and hardware samples to the house as well.
Can bi-folds go where our patio doors are?
In most cases yes, with no structural work, because the lintel over that opening already carries the span. A standard patio width usually suits a two or three panel set. If you want the opening taken wider, that is work we do rather than sub out.
What if the opening has to be widened?
Then a lintel is needed, normally a steel one. The surveyor assesses the wall and specifies it, a structural engineer is brought in where the span demands it, and the propping and the lintel are handled by us. Add a day on site for that.
How wide can a bi-fold go?
Up to 6 metres, about 20 feet, on a six panel aluminium set, and wider with a bespoke configuration. It depends on the frame material, the panel count and what the wall above will carry.
Aluminium or uPVC out here?
Aluminium for the slimmest frames, any RAL colour and a long span, which is the usual answer over about 3 metres. uPVC for value on a narrower opening, and it asks nothing of you afterwards. Both are thermally broken.
Will a glass wall make the room cold?
Not a modern one. A plastic thermal break runs through each aluminium frame, the units are argon filled double or triple glazing and U-values start from 1.2. The seals on every panel take away the draught an old sliding door lets in.
Which threshold suits an Ayrshire garden?
A flush track sits level with decking or a patio and gives a step free walk out. A weathered sill stands proud and sheds water better, which is often the safer bet on an exposed rear elevation. The surveyor decides it with you on the day rather than in advance.
Do you cover the villages round the town?
Yes. Hurlford, Crookedholm, Crosshouse, Knockentiber, Kilmaurs, Fenwick, Stewarton, Dunlop, Galston, Newmilns, Darvel and Dundonald are all covered, along with every KA1, KA2 and KA3 address. No call-out fee is charged at any of them.
