Most jobs land between £2,500 and £6,500 installed. The number of panels, whether you go aluminium or uPVC and the glazing specification decide where yours sits, with any structural work priced separately once the wall has been looked at. Various deposit options are available.
We want to knock the back wall wider. Do you handle that?
Yes. Widening an opening means a structural lintel, usually steel, and we take care of the propping and the lintel as part of the same job rather than leaving you to find a builder. A structural engineer is brought in where the span needs one. Building warrant advice is given at the survey.
Our house in Lenzie is Victorian. Will bi-folds suit the back of it?
They often work very well there, because the rear elevations are usually plain and the gardens are long. Frame colours can be different inside and out, so a dark grey outside and a lighter finish in the room is a straightforward ask. If the property is listed or sits in a conservation area, check with East Dunbartonshire Council before ordering, and we will raise it at the survey if it looks relevant.
How many panels should we have?
Anything from 2 to 7. Three and four panel sets cover most rear walls on a family house. What matters as much as the count is which way they stack and where the traffic door goes, since that is the panel you will use every day without folding the rest back.
Aluminium or uPVC for us?
Aluminium if the opening is wide or you want the frames barely there, because it holds a long span and takes any RAL colour. uPVC if the budget is the deciding factor and the opening is modest. Both are thermally broken and both are argon filled.
Are they warm enough to sit beside in winter?
The frames carry a thermal break so the cold does not travel through the metal, the glazing is argon filled double or triple, and U-values start from 1.2. With the panels shut and sealed the room holds its heat, which is not something an old aluminium patio door manages.
What about security on a back door?
Every panel bolts into the frame at the top and the bottom, with multi-point locking on the traffic door. A properly specified bi-fold is harder to get past than most back doors, and the glass is toughened.
Level threshold onto the patio?
A flush track can sit level with a patio or decking for a step free walk out, which is what most people here ask for. On an exposed elevation a weathered sill does a better job of shedding water. The surveyor will say which suits your ground levels.
Where can I see the frames and colours?
At our windows and doors showroom at Braehead, inside Dobbies Garden Centre, 75 Kings Inch Drive, Renfrew, G51 4FB, or at the Kilmarnock showroom on Glencairn Industrial Estate, KA1 4AZ. Braehead is open 10am to 5pm every day and Kilmarnock Monday to Saturday, Sundays by appointment, and the surveyor brings samples to you as well.
