Dundee City Council planning will tell you, and the surveyor will say honestly whether a composite door is likely to be accepted. Heritage designs exist for period entrances.

No. The colour is moulded through the outer skin rather than painted on, so salt has no paint film to lift, and coastal hardware finishes are specified where they are needed. Warm soapy water on the face of the door occasionally is all the maintenance there is.

Considerably. The whole door is tested to PAS 24, the core is solid rather than hollow, the lock throws hooks and bolts into the frame at several points, the cylinder is 3-star Kitemarked and anti-snap, and any glass is laminated.

It should not. The frame carries weather seals all the way round and the multi-point lock pulls the door onto them, which is what keeps driven rain outside. The surveyor takes note of how exposed the doorway is and specifies the threshold accordingly.

The choice covers well past 200 colour and glass options. Anthracite grey, black, cream, chartwell green and duck egg blue are the regular choices, woodgrain finishes suit older stone frontages, and the inside face can be a different colour from the street side. Handle finishes run to chrome, gold, matt black and antique.

A single working day for most front doors. The old door and frame come out, the new frame is set and sealed, the door is hung, the glass and hardware go on, and you are shown how the locking works. The doorway is closed and locked well before they finish.
