It does not, really. The colour is moulded through the skin instead of being painted onto it, so there is no film for salt to lift or chalk, and hardware finishes suited to coastal exposure are specified where they are needed. A wash with warm soapy water a few times a year is the whole maintenance job.

It should not. The frame carries weather seals and the multi-point lock draws the door onto them all the way up, rather than only at the handle, and that is what stops driven rain finding a way in. Exposure is looked at during the measure and the threshold is specified to match the doorway.

By a distance. A composite door is six times more insulating than timber, the core is insulated all the way through, and weather seals close the gaps that an old door leaves round the edge and under the bottom. Halls that were cold all winter usually stop being cold.

Every door is tested to PAS 24, the British standard covering forced entry. Behind that you get a solid core rather than a hollow one, multi-point locking with hooks and bolts, a 3-star Kitemarked anti-snap cylinder and laminated glass in any glazed panel.

Greys, blacks and creams suit the rendered houses, heritage blues and greens sit well on stone, and the woodgrain finishes pass for timber from the pavement. Inside and outside can be different colours, and the hardware comes in chrome, gold, matt black or antique.

One working day. The old door and frame come out, the new frame goes in and is sealed, the door is hung, the glass and hardware are fitted, and the locking is explained before they leave. Nothing is left open overnight and the old door goes away in the van.
