That is one of the main reasons people buy one. The 65mm door is filled with a dense insulating core, not air, and the glazed units are triple glazed with an argon fill and a warm-edge spacer. Two weather seals, one inside and one out, stop the draught round the edges that an older door lets through. You feel the difference on the first cold morning.

Every Palladio is made to measure, so a tall or wide opening in a granite terrace is not a problem. The surveyor measures the stone opening itself, and side panels and top lights are built with glass to match the door. The frame is finished in the same colour as the door, which looks far better against granite than a plain white frame.

Aberdeen has several, among them Old Aberdeen, Ferryhill, Footdee and Rosemount and Westburn. Replacing a front door in one of them, or on a listed building, can need consent from Aberdeen City Council, so speak to the planners before you place an order. Outside those areas, in the estates of Bridge of Don, Kingswells, Cove Bay and Portlethen, a replacement door does not normally need permission.

Monocoque means the structure is a single shell. A Palladio door is one fibreglass-reinforced piece, 65mm thick, and not a frame with panels slotted in or a skin bonded over a core. With no joints and no separate skin, there is nothing to warp, twist or peel. The hinges are hidden in the edge of the door, so they cannot be got at from outside.

Palladio doors are tested to PAS 24. Each one is fitted with a Milenco 10-point locking system and a 3-star cylinder, and hangs on four adjustable hinges inside a reinforced outer frame. The surveyor can take you through the locking on a sample.

Twenty-five designs make up the Original Collection, among them the Georgian, the Cambridge and the Kensington, and the Avant Garde collection adds flat-faced modern doors on the same construction. Colours run from anthracite grey, black and cream to duck egg blue and heritage shades exclusive to Palladio. The finish is a foil, so there is never any painting to do.

Palladio doors are built to order in Ireland, and you should allow 4 to 6 weeks from order to delivery. Once it arrives, fitting is a single working day. The old door and frame are taken out, the new set is secured and sealed, the locks are tested and your home is secure again before the installers head off.
