An ordinary composite door is a core with a thin skin bonded to it. A Palladio door is a single reinforced shell, a monocoque, filled with an insulating core, so there is no skin to peel and no joint to open up. The grain is moulded from real timber, the frame is foiled to match the door instead of being left white, and triple glazing is standard. We fit standard composite doors as well, so you can weigh up the two prices side by side.

It is tested to PAS 24, the security standard that insurers and building control look for. Each door carries a Milenco 10-point locking system, a 3-star cylinder and four adjustable hinges, set into a thick-walled shell. That is a serious specification for a main door facing a busy Glasgow street.

Palladio doors are made to order in Ireland, and the typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from order to delivery. Fitting is normally one working day: the old door and frame come out, the new frame and door go in, and the house is locked and weathertight before the installers leave.

That is where Palladio earns its price. The Original Collection has 25 designs, including the Georgian, Kensington and Cambridge panelled styles, which look at home on a Pollokshields or Dowanhill frontage, and side panels and top lights are made with matching glass. In a conservation area or on a listed building, changing a front door can need consent from Glasgow City Council, so check before you order.

Anthracite grey, duck egg blue, cream and black, plus heritage shades that are exclusive to Palladio. The finish is a Renolit foil over a through-coloured sheet instead of paint, and the frame is finished to match. There is no painting or staining to do, which suits a west of Scotland winter.
