This is where the range earns its keep. The Original Collection runs to 25 designs, and the panelled ones such as Georgian, Cambridge and Kensington sit comfortably on an interwar frontage. Side panels and a top light are made to match the door in colour and glass, so a wide original opening keeps its proportions instead of being blocked in.

Look at the Avant Garde collection, 8 designs built the same way as the Original but with flat faces, slim vertical glazing and stronger colours. Anthracite grey and black are the usual choices beside grey window frames, and a long bar handle finishes it off.

A builder's composite door is a core with a thin skin bonded to each face, and that skin is what eventually lifts at a corner. A Palladio is a monocoque, one reinforced 65mm shell filled with insulation, with no joint to open up. The frame is foiled to match the door instead of being left white, there are two weather seals rather than one, and triple glazing is included. We fit standard composite doors too, so both prices can go on the same quote.

It is tested to PAS 24, the standard building control and insurers look for. Every Palladio carries a Milenco 10-point locking system and a 3-star cylinder, hung on four adjustable hinges in a thick-walled shell. Adding a glazed side panel does not weaken it, as the glass is toughened and bonded into the frame.

Each door is made to your measurements in Ireland, and 4 to 6 weeks from order to delivery is typical. The fitting itself takes a day: the old door and frame come out, the new ones go in and are sealed, and the house is locked up before the installers drive away.
