Most composite doors copy timber. Palladio is moulded from it.
A door that faces a long front garden gets looked at properly, and printed grain does not hold up to that. Palladio panels have real depth because the mould was taken off a timber door, the shell is one reinforced piece with a dense core inside it, and the hinges are set into the edge where nothing can reach them. Two weather seals and triple glazing deal with everything a Lanarkshire winter throws up the road.

Our house at Cardowan is only a few years old. Is it worth changing the door?
A lot of people here do. The door that comes with a new house is usually a standard composite: a core with a 2mm skin bonded to it, in white or a single grey, with a white frame. A Palladio is one 65mm reinforced shell with no skin to lift, the frame is foiled to match the door rather than left white, and there are two weather seals in place of one. It changes the front of the house more than anything else you could spend the money on.
Which designs suit an older bungalow?
The Original Collection runs to 25, and the panelled ones such as the Georgian, Cambridge and Kensington sit naturally on a 1930s frontage. If the doorway has glass at the sides or a light above it, those are made as part of the same set with matching glass so the proportions stay as the builder drew them.
And for something modern?
The Avant Garde collection: eight flat-faced designs with slim vertical glazing and stronger colours, built exactly the same way as the Original. Anthracite grey and black are the usual picks next to grey window frames, finished with a long bar handle.
Where can I see one before I decide?
At either showroom. Braehead is inside Dobbies Garden Centre, 75 Kings Inch Drive, Renfrew, G51 4FB, and Kilmarnock is at Block 5, Unit 1, Glencairn Industrial Estate, KA1 4AZ. Braehead opens 10am to 5pm every day and Kilmarnock Monday to Saturday, with Sunday by appointment.
How strong is the locking?
Palladio is tested to PAS 24, the standard insurers and building control ask about. Each door has a Milenco 10-point locking system, a 3-star cylinder and four adjustable hinges concealed in the door edge. The surveyor will throw the lock on a sample so you can see how it works.
Does it make the hall warmer?
Noticeably. The core is a dense insulating material rather than air, the glazed units are triple glazed with an argon fill and a warm-edge spacer, and the two seals close off the draught round the edge that an old door lets through.
How long before it is on the house?
Each door is built to your sizes in Ireland, so plan on 4 to 6 weeks from order to delivery. The fitting is a single working day, and the house is locked and weathertight before the installers leave.
Is there a monthly payment plan?
