Yes, because nothing is bought off a size chart. The surveyor takes the width, the height, the depth of the reveal and the state of the sill, and the door is made to those figures. Deep openings in older Dumfries houses are ordinary work, and the frame is packed and sealed right round so the stone is not disturbed.

Not especially. A wider opening is usually handled with a side panel or a top light rather than an oversized panel, and both are made to the same measurements as the door. Tell the surveyor how the doorway is used, because a door that has to take a wheelbarrow through it gets a different specification from a front door.

One working day. The old door and frame come out, the new frame goes in plumb and is packed and screwed, the panel is hung, glass and hardware are fitted and the whole thing is sealed and tested before anybody leaves.

White, cream, black and anthracite grey, with woodgrain foils such as golden oak and rosewood, and the inside need not match the outside. Glass covers clear, obscure, leaded, bevelled and stained, and hardware comes in chrome, gold, black or graphite. The whole lot comes to the house at the survey.
