Most small kitchen refits fall between £6,500 and £15,000, fully fitted including rip-out, plumbing, electrics and worktops. That is often less than people expect. A compact galley in a tenement flat starts around £6,500, while a more complex L-shaped refit with premium worktops and integrated appliances typically lands around £12,000 to £15,000. Can you fit an island in a small kitchen?
It depends on the room. A full island usually needs at least 1 metre of clearance all round, which rules out most compact kitchens. However, a peninsula (an island attached to one wall) or a slim breakfast bar can often work brilliantly as a prep surface, eating area, and extra storage. Your designer will show you the options in 3D so you can see exactly what fits.
What layout works best for a small kitchen?
It depends entirely on the shape and dimensions of the room. Galley layouts (two parallel runs) are ideal for long, narrow rooms. L-shaped layouts suit square or near-square rooms and leave floor space open. Single-wall layouts work when the room is very narrow or doubles as a corridor. How long does a small kitchen install take?
Most small kitchens are completed in 3 to 6 days, which is slightly faster than a larger kitchen because there are fewer units and less plumbing to move. You will have running water and at least basic cooking facilities throughout the installation.
What tricks make a small kitchen feel bigger?
Light colours on doors and walls reflect light and open up the room. Handleless doors eliminate protruding hardware and create clean, unbroken lines. Integrated appliances sit flush with cabinetry, reducing visual bulk. Glass-fronted wall units add depth. LED under-cabinet lighting removes shadows and makes worktops feel more spacious.
