Sometimes, and we will tell you when it would. A handful of slipped slates on an otherwise sound roof is a repair. Where nails have corroded across the whole slope, or the sarking is soft, patching only buys a season and you end up paying for the scaffold twice. The loft photographs make that call much easier.
Usual signs are slates slipping repeatedly after wind, daylight visible through the sarking, damp patches on the ceilings below, and mortar crumbling along the ridge. On the post-war stock around Springfield, concrete tiles going porous and losing their surface is another one worth a look.
