A casement window is one that is attached to the frame by hinges at the side, opening like a door. Casement windows are typically in pairs, but can be constructed in a wide range of configurations, including sealed units or awning windows at the top.
Casement windows were popular throughout the UK before Sash windows, and usually were historically constructed with latticed lead work, creating what we now label as cottage style windows. More recently, cottage windows are recreated with double glazed glass, where lead work is added after to emulate this period style.
Casement windows typically open outward, but can also be arranged to open inwards.
