Weather Off The Carse

Coatings for Stirling harling, from Raploch to Bannockburn.

Ultimate Home Solutions supplies and fits new exterior wall coatings across Stirling, beginning with a free survey at your own house and a clear quote after it. The city sits where the Carse opens out under the Ochils, and wet weather funnels up the Forth valley and settles there. Away from the old stone of the Top of the Town, most Stirling housing is harled or dry dashed: the post-war streets of Raploch, Cornton, Braehead and Broomridge, the semis and bungalows at St Ninians, Torbrex and Borestone, and the villages out at Cambusbarron, Bannockburn, Cowie and Fallin. Driving rain soaks into tired harling, frost off the hills gets into whatever the rain left behind, and the wall starts to crack and blow. A surveyor inspects every elevation, then vetted applicators wash it back, repair it and coat it so the water stays outside.

How It Works

It's not paint. Here's what a proper wall coating actually does.

The Carse holds damp, and a harled wall that never gets a chance to dry out is a wall in trouble. Ordinary masonry paint makes it worse by sealing the moisture in behind a film. ProPerla and the other breathable systems we apply are microporous, so water vapour still leaves the wall while rain is turned away at the surface. On a north-facing gable at Raploch or a dry dashed bungalow at Whins of Milton, that difference is the whole job.

Breathable, not sealed

The coating lets water vapour escape from inside the wall, so trapped damp dries out instead of blowing the render off. Microporous, just like the wall wants to be.

Hydrophobic finish

Rain beads up and runs straight off rather than soaking in. A dry wall is a warmer wall, and it stops the freeze-thaw cracking that wrecks Scottish render.

A warmer home

A wet wall loses far more heat than a dry one. Keeping rainwater out of the masonry cuts heat loss through the walls and helps take the edge off your energy bills.

Self-cleaning

Dirt, algae and the green film that creeps up north-facing walls can't grip the surface, so the rain washes them away. The wall stays looking freshly done for years.

Any colour, fade-resistant

Choose from the full RAL range. The pigment is locked into the coating so it holds its colour through UV and weathering, and all workmanship is guaranteed.

Surfaces we coat

Pebbledash, roughcast, smooth and textured render, brick and stone. We power-wash, repair cracks and re-point first, so the coating goes onto a sound surface.

“Pitch perfect renovation experience.”

Entire process was really smooth and professional; from setting up the consultation, the walkthroughs, and the work itself. I honestly couldn't have asked for better. Got a new kitchen floor and full bathroom renovation installed in 5 days and perfectly within the schedule I needed to work too. Both rooms are a dream come true. The whole company was amazing and I was kept informed every step of the way.

“Excellent quality and fantastic customer service.”

Excellent quality and fantastic customer service. I was looking to upgrade the windows and light in my home. I cannot stress how frustrated I was with being told I couldn't do what I wanted to do. I said what I hoped for and worked with Ultimate Home Solutions to get exactly that. Great range, very affordable and the cleanest and most organised installers I've met. I would very happily recommend and would use again.

We come to you

The samples, the inspection and the quote all happen at your house.

In a single visit you choose the colour, the surveyor goes round each elevation and you get a straight account of what the work involves, on a day that suits the household.

The colour decided properly

Samples come with the surveyor and can be held against the wall itself, because a shade on a chart and a shade on a house are not the same thing.

Cracks, blown patches, moss and damp are noted and photographed, so nothing in the quote comes as a surprise.

FAQ

The questions Stirling homeowners ask us.

Whether we cover the area, what it costs, damp gables, cracked harling, the conservation areas in the old town, colours, timescales, finance and the guarantee.

Not what you were after?

Phone us and somebody who has been round a few hundred of these walls will pick up. We are on the phone every day and most messages are answered inside the hour.

Do you work in Stirling, and what does a survey cost?

We cover the city and the towns round it, and the survey is free. A surveyor comes to your home anywhere in FK7 or FK8, from Raploch and Cornton to St Ninians, Bannockburn, Cowie and Fallin, with no travel charge and no call-out fee. The quote afterwards costs nothing either.

What is a full house likely to cost?

Most whole-house coatings fall between £3,500 and £8,500 applied, taking in the scaffolding, the power-wash, repairs to the wall, primer, base coat and top coat. Larger detached properties can reach £14,000 or more. You get a clear quote after the free survey, with no obligation, and various deposit options are available.

The wall never seems to dry out. Will a coating help?

That is the problem it is built for. A hydrophobic finish turns rain away at the surface, so the harl is not soaking up water every time the weather comes up the valley. A dry wall loses less heat than a wet one, and there is far less water in it for the frost to expand when it turns cold off the Ochils.

Our harling is cracked and sounds hollow in places. Too late?

Rarely. Loose harl is cut out, hollow areas are made good and cracks are filled and blended in before any coating is applied, since coating over failed harling achieves nothing. If one elevation is genuinely beyond repair, the surveyor says so at the visit and explains what it needs first.

We live in the old town. Do we need permission?

Very possibly, so check before you commit. The historic centre of Stirling, the Top of the Town and a number of other areas are conservation areas, and there are listed buildings throughout them, so changes to the outside of a building are looked at carefully. Stirling Council planning will tell you where you stand, and we will provide the product information they ask for.

How many days will you be here?

Usually 3 to 7 working days, weather permitting. The first day is the power-wash and the repairs, then primer, base coat and top coat over the days that follow, with the work sealed each evening so a wet night does not undo it. If the weather stops play we tell you rather than leave you wondering.

There is damp showing on the gable wall inside. Is a coating the answer?

If rain is driving through the wall, and on an exposed gable it often is, a hydrophobic coating typically cures that penetrating damp. Rising damp and condensation come from elsewhere and need other measures, with a coating only helping alongside them. The surveyor identifies the cause first and will tell you plainly if a coating is not the fix.

Do we have to stick to white?

Not at all. Any RAL colour can be mixed, and the surveyor brings samples to the house. If you ask, a small test area can go on your own wall so you can see it against the light here before deciding. The pigment is locked into the coating rather than painted on, so it resists fading.

Is there finance on a wall coating?

Yes. We offer Buy Now Pay 12 Months Later, flexible credit up to 24 months, and longer-term flexible credit up to 10 years. The initial eligibility check is a soft search with no impact on your credit score, and gives an instant decision. Ultimate Home Solutions is authorised by the FCA as a credit broker (not a lender).

Which FK postcodes do you cover?

FK7 and FK8 in full: the city centre, the Top of the Town, Riverside, Raploch, Cornton, Causewayhead, Cambuskenneth, Torbrex, King's Park, Braehead, Broomridge, Borestone, St Ninians, Whins of Milton, Bannockburn, Cambusbarron, Cowie, Fallin and Plean. Surveyors also reach Bridge of Allan, Dunblane, Gargunnock and Tullibody, and travel is never charged.

What exactly is guaranteed?

All workmanship is guaranteed. That takes in the preparation, the repairs and the application of the coating itself. The surveyor goes through the detail with you during the free visit, so you know where you stand before anything is booked.
