Yes. A modern sliding sash window holds on to the proportions, the astragal bars and the vertical opening of the original, but it seals properly, so the rattle and the draught stop together. In the older terraces the opening is rarely square, so the window is made to the sizes taken on the day rather than to a standard size.
They usually make a marked difference. Water gathers where the glass is coldest, and a sealed unit with a Low-E coating and a warm-edge spacer keeps the inner pane much warmer than old glazing manages. Trickle vents, fitted where the regulations call for them, give the damp air a way out instead of letting it run down on to the sill.
