It depends on how many openings there are, the styles, the frame finish and the glass. A mid-terrace with five standard windows is not the same job as a detached house with a landing window and a bay. The survey costs nothing and the quote is clear and free of obligation. It can, and it is a job we see regularly in the older districts. A wide opening is rebuilt as a frame in the right number of sections, reinforced where the span calls for it, so you keep the light without keeping the draught. The surveyor decides the layout with you on the day, including which panes open and which stay fixed.
In sections, with the right access equipment, and usually with a tilt and turn or a fixed pane above an opener so the glass can be cleaned from inside the house afterwards. Nobody should be leaning out of a landing window with a cloth, and the design should make sure they never have to.
Misting means the seal has failed and the gas that insulated the unit has escaped. Where the frames, hinges and handles are still sound, the glass alone can sometimes be swapped. Where the frames have dropped or the gaskets have hardened, a new window is the better value, and the surveyor will give you an honest read on which applies.
They will deal with most of it. What you feel is nearly always air tracking past tired gaskets and around frames that have moved over the years, not cold coming through the glass. New frames are packed and sealed into the opening, the gaskets are fresh and multi-point locking pulls the sash tight shut.
It helps a good deal. Modern sealed units with sound seals shut out far more than old glazing with perished ones. Where a bedroom faces the M8 or sits under the approach to the airport, acoustic glass with thicker laminated panes can be specified for that room on its own.
